These headphones utilize Bluetooth 5.0, with support for SBC, AAC, and Sony’s own LDAC codec. The latter is able to transfer high-resolution music, but you’ll need compatible devices and streaming services. The WH-1000XM4s also allows you to connect two Bluetooth devices simultaneously and automatically switch between the two when needed. You enable this feature through the Sony Headphones Connect app and it works very well.
A subtle improvement over the XM3 is the sensitiveness of their touch panels. They respond faster to tapping on a panel and are easier to control when making a call or listening to media. Sony has also added a feature that helps voices sound clearer and more precise on calls which is noticeable and a nice touch.
Although the WH-1000XM4s may not be perfect, they’re some of the best wireless headphones we’ve ever tested. They’re comfortable, feel good to the touch, and have an impressive battery that lasts for more than 30 hours continuously. They can be used in a passive manner with a TRS cable. This is great for traveling or home conserving power.
The WH-1000XM4s are better than the Bowers & Wilkins Px7 S2 Wireless over-ears. The Sonys are more comfortable, and their ANC is able to block out more background noise. The B&Ws have an EQ that is more flexible, as well as a companion app to tweak the audio performance. However, the B&Ws have an improved design, and they can connect with two Bluetooth devices at once. They also support aptXHD and feature an AI-driven engine that attempts to increase the size of compressed music to high resolution. This is called DSEE Extreme, and it improves the clarity of music when listening to lossless audio files.
2. Bose QuietComfort 45/QC45 Wireless

The new model doesn’t reinvent the wheel. It retains the same formula that made its predecessor so successful but it also includes the USB-C port and improved noise cancellation.
Similar to the QC 35 II before them, these over-ear Bose headphones sport a luxurious look and feel that exudes quality. The headband, constructed of plastic, provides an incredibly solid feel due to the hinges made of steel at pivot points. They also have the familiar ratcheting mechanism when you expand or retract your ear cups. The cups have soft cushions that fit securely over the ears and do not apply pressure to your head. When folded they weigh 238 grams. They can be used when you’re wearing a coat or Guebsch explained in a blog post sweater as the noise-canceling works even when you aren’t on your head.
Despite their reputation for comfort, the QC45s do not offer the most impressive sound quality for this price range. The frequencies are comparatively flat and lack the details that headphones with higher prices might be capable of bringing out. The upper registers are amplified which is fine for most music genres but can be a problem for more delicate and intricate genres. The bass is decent but is lacking punch.
The ability to pause the playback after removing the headset is a feature that’s absent. This is a standard feature in this price bracket and is something that Bose’s rivals have offered for a long time. Another oversight is the absence of an in-app EQ. Bose offers preset EQ settings in the app however it would be nice to have a manual control.

The QC45s come with four in-built microphones to hear your voice when you make calls. The Bathys are their first wireless noise cancelling headphones. They are stunning in appearance and sound. They also have a built in high performance USB DAC which means you can use them for both wireless and wired listening.
Focal claims that the Bathys can play Bluetooth music for 30 hours. We had more than 40 hours of playback on average from a single charge. If you need to recharge, there’s an indicator light on the right ear cup that will turn red when the headphone has to be charged.
They have a decent amount of features for headphones of this price point, including support for multiple devices simultaneously and automatic pairing (though you’ll need to manually select your source device each time you want to listen). The headphones come with an inbuilt microphone that works with voice assistants such as Siri or Alexa. They also come with an easy-to-use interface that makes it simple to control your music and take calls.
Bathys over-ear headphones perform well in our noise cancellation test, reducing ambient noise by an average of 9 decibels. It’s not as impressive as the ANC in the Bose QuietComfort 45/QC45 Wireless, however it’s still quite effective.
In our tests of the quality of sound from headphones in our tests of headphone sound quality, the Bathys performed well overall with an overall frequency response that is in line with the SoundGuys headphone preference curve, with only minor deviations in the mids and bass. The most obvious improvement in this model is the huge battery, which promises up to 60 hours of playback when the noise cancellation feature activated. This is easily twice as much as most of the competitors and sufficient to allow you to travel for a longer period of time without having to search for an outlet.
Billy Steele, senior editor at Engadget, gave the headphones a score of 82. He cited their audio quality and ANC features as strengths. He has only one complaint that they lack of gravitas in the mids and the treble. This makes orchestral pieces sound flat instead of grand. The bass is well-rounded, however, it can be overemphasized, which can lead to fatigue in songs with heavy bass lines, like the drums in As I Lay Dying’s Forever. The Momentum 4s are comfy and should not put too much pressure on your ears or neck. They can be a bit fidgety if you wear them around the home or for long listening sessions.
